I have had the extraordinary privilege of being able to spend time with my mother into this her 97th year. This past week, I was with her again, but this time having to deal with the ultimate acknowledgment that her life and mine are changing. You see, until now she has been a fiercely independent woman, the matriarch of our family, and someone who delighted my days at 5:00 every afternoon when we sat down to talk and do a virtual glass of wine toast. My trip this time was to help her get ready for her move to assisted living. That happened on Saturday. She knew she needed help and didn’t want to be alone anymore. For that, my brother and I are most grateful. Still, giving up a life of independence and her home is filled with nostalgia and tears, for us all. What I have been reminded of, again, is how extraordinary every day we have with those we love is. There is NEVER enough time, but we can make each day we do have special time.
Mothers are our beginnings and our rocks. This week, let us celebrate all of those wonderful mothers who are ours and those mothers we know. They make us better people.
“Sometimes I know the words to say to give thanks for all you’ve done, but then they fly up and away as quickly as they come.
How could I possibly thank you enough, the one who makes me whole, the one to whom I owe my life, the forming of my soul.
The one who tucked me in at night. The one who stopped my crying, the one who was the expert to know when I was lying. “

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all of the wonderful women who are mothers to their own children and to those they have loved and adopted along the way.
Sending blessings to all,
