Thoughts Approaching Easter

When one has lived as many years as many of us, it’s almost certain that there have been times and years when significant annual celebrations and events like Christmas and Easter have felt routine and even stale. Perhaps it’s happened in the past and perhaps it’s happening now. If so, fear not. Know that you are in good company. Even great saints experienced times of spiritual darkness, dryness, and doubt.

Yet the saints are precisely saints because they passed through the obstacles found in their lives, just as Moses and the Chosen People passed through the Red Sea. Moreover, first Moses and then the saints did so not by their own efforts, but by God’s grace. And if history is a fair indicator, then we can be confident that we too can and will pass through any darkness or staleness we might be experiencing this year.

This week we remember that one can only reach Easter morning after first living and passing through Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. This week we also remember that while the events we will celebrate happened to others centuries ago, their effects as well as the resulting gifts are our own enduring, eternal legacy. And that is reason to indeed celebrate!

Eastertime Blessings…

Prayers and Reflections for Holy Week

Let everyone understand that the real love of God does not consist in tear-shedding, nor in that sweetness and tenderness for which we often long, just because they console us, but in serving God by serving those around us, in justice, fortitude of soul, and humility. – Teresa of Avila
More is accomplished by prayer if one carries it quietly on one’s heart than if one uses many words about it every day. Author Unknown

Daily reflections and scripture readings are often part of our practices for Lent. This year, you can take advantage of readings and reflections all in one place and written by persons from Saint Andrew’s, Gobin UMC and Beach Grove UMC. The daily meditations will be in the newsletter each week and go from Wednesday to Tuesday, except for Sunday. Whether you enjoy these every day, or as the Spirit moves you, may this resource be a blessing!

Thanks to all the Saturday Non-Food Pantry Volunteers

We were very lucky again with the beautiful weather this past Saturday. And we had more wonderful DePauw volunteers passing out products. We gave out: 250 bags of products, 230 bottles of household cleaner, and 165 Easter bags for the kiddos.

We also gave out many, many packages of diapers, feminine hygiene, and incontinence products. Thank you to our new and repeat donors! If it is possible for you to continue to help with these products, we would appreciate it. We run out of almost all of these things almost every month.

• Noon to 3:00 p.m.
There will be a drive through distribution and no lunch. Kate Berry is coordinating the distribution. We are very grateful to Martha Rainbolt, Carl Huffman, Karen Hirt Mannon, and Christiane Wisehart who have worked very hard to obtain supplies for the Non-Food Pantry. Kroger is not able to acquire enough products for us so the items are being purchased from a variety of sources. This is much more expensive. Donations to help offset this extra cost will be gratefully accepted!
