Course Checks For A Lenten Journey – Week One

One way to think of Lent is that of a journey. A journey inward, however, rather than one out there. In that spirit, please accept the following “road signs” along the way. Blessings… All travelers, somewhere along the way, find it necessary to check their course, to see how they are doing. We wait until we are sick, or shocked into stillness, before we do the commonplace things of getting our bearings. And yet, we wonder why we are depressed, why we are unhappy, why we lose our friends, why we are ill-tempered. This condition we pass on to our children, our husbands, our wives, our associates, our friends. Cultivate the mood to linger. …Who knows, God may whisper to you in the quietness what God has been trying to say to you , oh, for so long a time. Howard Thurman (Deep Is the Hunger)

Psalm 25:1-10
To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.;
My God, I put my trust in you; let me not be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.;
Let none who look to you be put to shame; rather let those be put to shame who are treacherous.;
Show me your ways, O LORD, and teach me your paths.;
Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long.;
Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love,for they are from everlasting.
Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions;remember me according to your steadfast love and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD.;
You are gracious and upright, O LORD; therefore you teach sinners in your way.;
You lead the lowly in justice and teach the lowly your way.;
All your paths, O LORD, are steadfast love and faithfulness to those who keep your covenant and your testimonies.

As Episcopalians, we might be acquainted with the sixteenth century Anglican theologian, Richard Hooker’s, “three-legged stool.” Hooker suggested that our Anglican method for doing theology and ultimately making theological decisions must always consider three “legs” – scripture, tradition, and human reason. For just as a stool cannot stand with only one or even two legs, so too must theology stand on sacred scripture, our shared best practices and traditions, and our human ability to reason, examine, and then adapt based on changing circumstances and information.

In this upcoming Lenten season, the church asks us to stand on a different “three-legged stool” – with the legs of our Lenten stool being prayer, fasting, and alms-giving. While each leg is valuable in itself, a Lent built on faithful practice of all three will be a blessed Lent indeed.

Prayers and Reflections for the first week of Lent

Daily reflections and scripture readings are often part of our practices for Lent. This year, you can take advantage of readings and reflections all in one place and written by persons from Saint Andrew’s, Gobin UMC and Beach Grove UMC. The daily meditations will be in the newsletter each week and go from Wednesday to Tuesday, except for Sunday. Whether you enjoy these every day, or as the Spirit moves you, may this resource be a blessing!
